Use FaceBook As A Weapon?? A Response

Posted on September 24, 2009. Filed under Crazy Stuff and tagged , , , , .

Have you ever tried to explain what you do online to “regular”
people?  If not then try it sometime and let me know how
that goes.  ;)

(FYI, this is in response Guy Kawasaki’s blog post today)

I’ve come to find there are 2 dominating schools of thought
when it comes to online marketing and especially regarding
people using places like FaceBook,…

The first is obvious… most people fire up an FB
account to network and have fun with friends.

The other school of thought goes something like this:

“FaceBook is a huge invasion of privacy and I’ll never use
it as long as I live because I don’t want all my business out
there for the world to see…”

On the surface this could make total sense, and many moons ago
I would have let it slide with an easy shrug and a fast “how ‘bout
them Bears” conversation changer…

These days, however, I like to dig a bit deeper.

At the core, the above mentioned philosophy looks a lot like this:

“If I use FaceBook people in black suites will come into my home, go through
all my personal stuff and post everything about me all over the net for
everyone to see.”

What people with a philosophy like that (and there are many) are missing
is that everything on line is 100% what YOU decide it should be.

YOU get to chose if you post those pictures of you sleeping next to the
toilet at your best friends bachelor party after having 9 Jagger Bombs
and a shot of Patron… (Something I know nothing about)

YOU get to chose how you paint the picture the world sees…
YOU get to create whatever “external” life you chose.

Are you looking for a job?  Then might I suggest NOT posting
the frat party photos where you and the boys dressed up like girls
and did pole dances for the ladies of Alpha-Delta-Theta!

Same with running a business…

YOU decide what sort of image people will see, and who you attract.

Decide how YOU want the world to see you and craft an image
to embody that end result.

Because I guarantee you they’re looking… and in today’s world
NOT seeing you is just as bad as you sending the wrong message.

End Game: Learn to use FaceBook as a weapon that works for you
rather than against you.

Chat later,

Jonny

PS: Please ReTweet this post AND leave your comments, I always love
to know what you think of all this jazz…

Hahahaha! I totally know what you mean. My parents are like that now.

But it’s true, as individuals we’re 100% in control of what people see about us.

Jonny, I’m guessing this is an expansion on the post from yesterday?

Good stuff man!

Jonny,

WOW! You are really blogging these days! Great content and a great point about how people see what’s up with the net.

But after reading this AND Guy’s post I think you guys are dead on. Anyone can taylor their image to get EXACTLY what they’re looking for if they think about it first.

Of couse that means people need to actually think about it!

Yes you are sooooo right!

I hate it when people do that spammy “Buy My Stuff” dance on my wall. I will block every one of them.

It’s time people understood places like that are NOT for selling but for meeting cool people and building that circle of influence

Good stuff Jonny!

Mike I like it!

And I totally forgot about how if another person uploads a photo of you and taggs it… you are powerless to stop the effect if you’re not also part of the network.

You can just untag the thing!

Jonny, I know a couple of underground Facebook ninjas from overseas who can teach how to use Facebook as a weapon of mass monetization (without the spam). Nobody is doing what they are, because nobody else can. Compared to them what Perry Belcher was recently selling is a total joke. They are working with some real heavy hitters right now (I don’t want to name names here). If you want more info, drop me a line. They have a launch coming up you may very well want to be part of.

Jonny, i totally agree. I think when people r so guarded about their privacy it’s probably because they had a very bad past, or r not proud of their present state of being, or just simply don’t understand, or just simply don’t see the benefits ;o

I hear the ‘privacy’ comment from alot of people who just don’t get it and that’s ok … maybe they r not meant 2 b on SM???

Jonny, what if we show marketers, “REAL-TIME MARKETING” and how if they r on SM and someone has a problem, they can address that person immediately, thus landing a customer.

yes, i liken it to that drunk at the bachelor party who doesnt know his limits. “facebook blows because everyone can see what an idiot i am” exactly johnny, if you dont show us ur idiocy, we wont see it.

Hi Jonny,
I totally agree with you on this one, as it is up to the individual what everyone else can see about them!

To tell you the truth Jonny I had thought about this before, BUT, my other thought was, why has nobody done this yet? because I know some people who use twitter in the same way. But hey, why not use it for business,You never know I may be one of the early one’s for a change….Lol

Best regards

I enjoyed your post, it gave me a good laugh! It is so sad how some people are still deathly afraid to buy online or omg join something like Facebook.

As you stated you are in control of the content… You get to choose how much of you people see.

I am all for Attraction Marketing and being you.

And just like in a face to face interaction where you can choose to let it all hang loose or hold back… The online world is no different!

Who are you? Whoever you want to be ; )

Amen Jonny, amen. “Invasion of privacy”??? I think the British would say “Poppycock!” lol.

“…because I don’t want all my business out there for the world to see”?? Well, if you go streaking butt-nekkid across the golf course during a tournament, you can’t blame everyone ELSE for being able to see your flabby birthday suit!! Same principle here.

Great post man; personally it’s got me thinking a lot more about how I’m portraying and will be portraying myself on Facebook etc.

Hi Jonny its Lee here from manchester uk iam 7 months into I.M and doing quiet crap thanks for asking.I would like to no if you think these facebook/twitter software submissions and worth buying or just a joke and a waste of time cheers your loyal fan take care.

Lee,

Nope. NEVER use auto submit software with that stuff. Totally kills the purpose of being in the system. I’m launching a new product on Oct 5th that shows you exactly how to monetize the networks WITHOUT spamming them.

When you “get it” the traffic from these 2 places is HUGE and totally sick. I’ll show you what I mean in a few days here.

Got a video coming out

Makes perfect sense to me. You are what you want others to see. You create your own character on FB.

Posted on September 24, 2009 at 4:26 pm

Totally agree about the “face” that you create and present to the world however Facebook makes it more complicated to see than say MySpace however Facebook is rated #2 so it makes sense to use Facebook as much as possible.

hey Jonny, funniest thing happened – I told my sister that i worked on the net – to which she replied, “selling what? omg ewww” – the misconception being – people don’t get the net, so if your on there selling its gotta be dodgy porn or something!! Took me ages to convince my sis that it was totally above board….. Offliners need to catch up haha!

Posted on September 24, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Hey Jonny, if you had to chose, which is best, facebook or twitter?

Posted on September 24, 2009 at 5:43 pm

Lol, it’s even hard to explain what you do to people in Sweden, because you can’t use the terms “internet marketing”, so I say “I sell stuff people buy, on places such as facebook…” – hehe.

I don’t sell much on Facebook, but share info that’s on my blog and share videos/content etc.

Great Blog my friend.
Recently I got requests for “Friends” to join me on Facebook and I made a BIG mistake. I agreed. Now every time I log on they are in my face with Advertising Crap and no social input. They are just using my real friends to hassle and push their crap.
I have just thrown them out and a lesson learnt.
If you use Facebook properly and socialize as you should do, it is easy to share with others what you do and insert a small web site link.
I enjoy Facebook as a way of relaxing away from my IM business and have even signed on to Farmtown and am doing very well.
Its what we Irish living in California call a “wee diversion away from the B.S.”
Have a great day.

This is important information you mention on creating image. I am just starting out and trying to figure out how to use facebook to create the image that will attract people. It is complicated for I am in different niches and I am still trying to get the swing of things.I am sure I can get better with practice. Can you sign up for more than one account if you have different niches? Like to know. Any just joined twitter which has my brain confused in the “twilight twitter” zone. Much to learn. Social media here I come.

Hi there jonny,

Perseption on things is a individual game and can’t be blamed.
Isn’t being a human being a PR game for centuries, what a lucky time we live in right now with these technoligies at hand. It’s up to the individual minds to reconize them and use them to there ability.

looking forward to your thoughts on how to use facebook.

Thumbs up jonny

You can have your opt in page, you can create a cause page for your non profit, it gives you a chance to build trust in marketing relationship. I like my Facebook. I have all kinds of important marketers connected.

Nice post. I never realized how you present yourself to the world will be how your audience sees you! Social Media is about building relationships, old and new.

But if you have people from way back, I can see past behaviors leaking into your social media profiles.

Remember we where all young once and made many mistakes along the way. Be good and serve your follow man and it will pay you dividends.

Hi Jonny,

Excellent point!
I think the mistake that some (many!) people make that if they create a Facebook page, a website, or whatever, that it’s “mine” – like they own it and can expect it to be private.
It’s not!
It’s all RENTED space and therefore subject to the vaguaries of whatever the landlord wants to do.
Facebook makes its money by people coming along and providing it with free content (your party pics etc!). It’s a commercial exchange – Facebook “gives” you a page and you “give” them content. Money may not change hands but it certainly ain’t “free” !!

You got to think of it like a billboard in the street. (Also rented space which can get “hacked” by vandals.) If you wouldn’t put it on a billboard along a highway, or on a TV ad during SuperBowl, don’t put it on the net.

Hey, thanks for your outlook. social n/w in sites have extended beyond their normal usage to a whole new world of usefullness, and it should not be underestimated as you pointed out.

How true it is! If you use it the right way it could help you. the other is true to and if you can not be found that is as bad as anything you could put on it. (almost). Nice post.
Keep up the good work.
